Simple Lawnmower Maintenance

Do you have trouble starting your lawnmower up in the spring? Before deciding to take your lawnmower in for repair, try these few simple suggestions. After completing them most of the time your lawnmower will fire up and run like a champ.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

Pull and clean the Spark Plug

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

Most of the time simply cleaning the spark plug will solve your lawnmower woes. To do this, disconnect the wire attached to the end of the spark plug. Then using a wrench or a Ratchet/Socket, remove the spark plug. If the spark plug is black or wet looking, you have probably found your problem on why the lawnmower is not starting.

Using fine grit sandpaper, sand the top of the spark plug down to bare metal. Make sure you sand all around the edges of the piece of metal (tab) that sits just above the electrode. Make sure that there is a gap between the metal tab and the electrode. If you still have the lawnmower manual and a feeler gauge you can adjust the gap to the specifications. However, if there is a small gap it is probably sufficient for the spark plug to operate correctly.

Make sure the spark plug is free of dust and dry. Then screw it back into the cylinder and connect back the wire to the end of the spark plug. Then try starting the lawn mower.

Check for Oil

Make sure there is oil in the lawnmower and that it is at the proper level.

Check for Fuel

Make sure there is gas in the lawn mower. If you have old gas in the lawnmower and did not put in a fuel stabilizer at the end of the season, replace the gas. If you had drained the gas tank at the end of the previous season, then fill the tank at least half full with new gas.

Check the Fuel Line

Like many of us, at the end of the previous lawn mowing season we turn off the fuel line switch. Make sure it is in the on position. If you have done all of the above and the engine will not fire, then check to see if the fuel is getting to the carburetor. Temporarily disconnect the fuel hose from the carburetor and see if gas pours out. If so reconnect the hose. If not, then check the fuel line. It may be gummed up or the fuel filter is clogged.

Check the Air Filter

Make sure the Air Filter is clean. If it is dirty and oily then replace it. If it just dirty shake it and knock out some of the dust. This may solve your problem; however I would still recommend replacing it.

Clean the Carburetor

First turn off the fuel line. Disassembling and cleaning the carburetor is not as bad as you may think. Usually there is a nut on the underside of the carburetor. Remove this and pull the bottom portion of the carburetor off. Clean the inside of this lower portion of the carburetor and then make sure the float valve moves up and down freely. The float valve is a plastic object about 1.5" in diameter that hangs down when you remove the lower portion of the carburetor.

Reconnect the lower portion of the carburetor and turn on the fuel line again.

Try restarting the lawnmower. If it still does not work after performing all of these procedures, then take it to a repair shop. However, from personal experience these procedures usually solve the problem.

Sharpen the Blade

Finally, make sure you sharpen the blade. This will ensure you minimize the torque on the engine while cutting the grass. Not to mention, your lawn will get a more even cut.

Finding John Deere Lawn Mower Parts

I am the proud owner of a John Deere LT155 riding lawn mower. Rarely do I have any troubles with it, but occasionally I have to replace some parts. Even the highest quality machines, like the John Deere, will need work done on them at some point - even if it's just routine maintenance.
I've found that my John Deere is easy to work on, and the manual provides great direction on how to repair it. Because John Deere is such a popular brand, finding parts is not hard at all...but finding affordable John Deere parts can be a bit more difficult. The dealers will have all John Deere parts you'll ever need and can easily order it for you if they don't currently have it in stock. They may even carry some used parts that will work great for whatever your repair. When I need a part for my John Deere garden tractor, I usually start by calling the dealer first to ask if they have any used parts. If not, I then ask how much it would cost for the new replacement part and jot the amount down. By doing this, I also get the exact name of the part I need and write this down as well.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

After this, I get online and try to find the part cheaper elsewhere. Often, I can get a cheaper used or new part online and have it shipped to my house. Of course you have to factor in the shipping costs when looking for parts this way, but a lot of the suppliers have already taken this into account and have priced their parts accordingly.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

By doing this method of research, you can save yourself some money but still get what you need for your John Deere equipment. There are a wealth of John Deere parts suppliers on the web and, with a little time, you should be able to find what your looking for at a reasonable price. If you do happen to run stuck, the dealer will always have what you need. John Deere dealers can also provide some great support on how to install the item if you need help. Since I'm not a mechanic by trade, I can use a little help occasionally. I have a few great John Deere dealers in my area and check in with them for the more difficult repairs I encounter with my John Deere mower.

Once you've located the part, you have to install it. Unless you're a really skilled mechanic with John Deere mowers, this usually requires a good manual. I rely on mine for anything outside of the regular maintenance ie. servicing it, airing up tires etc. If you don't have a manual for your John Deere, you can also purchase these from the dealer or try to find a new or used one online. There are many sources for used manuals available online. If you type the name/model of your John Deere into your favorite search engine, you should easily find what you're looking for.

Top Seven Common Riding Lawn Mower Problems and Solutions

Riding lawn mowers are valuable and incredibly useful tools that can save time and energy spent on yard work. However, riding lawn mowers can have problems and need maintenance. Listed below are seven (7) common riding lawn mower problems along with trouble shooting tips. If a problem cannot be solved from the advice laid out in this article, contact a repair shop.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

NOTE: These materials are prepared for use by trained technicians who are experienced in the service and repair of equipment of the kind described in this publication, and are not intended for use by untrained or inexperienced individuals. Such individuals should seek the assistance of a service technician or dealer.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

Problem 1: Engine Will Not Crank

Sometimes the simplest solution may fix this riding lawn mower problem. Confirm that all the safety features of the riding lawn mower are functioning correctly. Make sure the mowing deck is not engaged, the parking brake is on and the operator is seated on the riding lawn mower. If one of the safety switches has not been properly activated the riding lawn mower will not start.

The next potential issue to check is the riding lawn mower's battery. In rare cases, the battery cable leads can work loose from the battery terminals. The black negative battery cable must be attached securely to the negative battery terminal. The negative terminal will be marked with a "NEG", "N", or "-" notation. The red positive battery cable should be connected securely to the positive battery terminal and will be marked with a "POS", "P", or "+" notation.

IMPORTANT WARNING: electrolyte is diluted sulfuric acid. Use extreme care to avoid spilling. It can destroy clothing and burn your skin. Test the battery to determine its condition. This can be accomplished by checking the specific gravity of each cell with a hydrometer. A fully charged cell will measure 1.250 specific gravity. Verify that the fluid level in the battery is adequate. If the fluid level is low, fill with distilled water so that it rests just below the split rings; then charge the battery at 5 amps maximum charge for 30 minutes until all cells measure 1.250 specific gravity. If all cells are unable to reach 1.250 specific gravity, replace the battery.

If the battery is in working order, locate the fuse holder(s) and inspect to see if a fuse is blown. Refer to the operator's manual to find the fuse holder(s) location. Check for loose, bare, or pinched wires and replace any blown fuse with the proper amperage automotive fuse. Finally, ensure the engine ground wire is in fact grounded. There should be a black ground wire running from the engine to a non-painted metal surface on the frame or a mounting bolt.

NOTE: Not all riding lawn mowers are equipped with an engine ground wire to frame.

Problem 2: Engine Cranks, But Does Not Start

If the riding lawn mower will not start, check the fuel level. The engine will not fire if there is not enough fuel in the carburetor. It is also possible the fuel line is clogged or blocked. Clean the line and replace the fuel filter to solve this problem.

Make sure the throttle and/or choke is in the proper position. This position can vary from model to model of riding lawn mower. Consult the operator's manual for the proper positioning of the choke and throttle for the riding lawn mower in question.

Faulty spark plugs or disconnected wires can also cause the engine to crank but not start. Run a diagnosis on the spark plug wire connection by using a spark plug tester to see if any plugs are faulty. Clean the gap, making sure it is set properly or replace any faulty spark plugs.

Problem 3: Engine Is Smoking

The most common cause of an engine smoking is having too much oil. Examine the oil level and remove any excess oil if overfilled. The problem should go away once the excess oil burns off. If the smoking persists, it could be possible the engine is losing its crankcase vacuum. Loss of crankcase vacuum can be caused by a broken or improperly seated dipstick, dipstick tube, or valve cover as well as a defective engine breather assembly or other internal engine damage. Replace any defective parts to restore crankcase vacuum pressure.

Problem 4: Unusual and Excessive Vibration

Blades, pulleys and spindles should not be bent or damaged. Mowing over a large object such as rocks, roots, sewer lids etc. can cause damage to the parts. Any damaged parts should be replaced.

A twisted or damaged belt may also be the culprit. All belts should be in good shape and properly routed. Replace the belt if it's torn or shows signs of wear.

Vibrations can also be caused by loose or missing mounting bolts, running the engine at a low RPM, or an improperly adjusted cutting deck.

Problem 5: Bagging, Discharging, or Mulching Poorly

There are a few actions that can be taken to minimize problems with the bagging, discharging and mulching. First, check the engine speed. The engine must be operating at full throttle for the bagging, discharging or mulching functions to work properly. Proper set-up of the deck is critical to the quality of cut. The deck should be level side to side and always lower in the front than the back by 3/8 of an inch. If that does not solve the problem, sharpen or replace the mower blades.

NOTE: Make sure the proper blade is being used for the correct application.

Operating conditions such as wet or exceptionally tall grass can cause poor functionality. To remedy these situations, always allow the lawn to dry prior to cutting, and if the grass is too tall, mow with the deck at a higher setting before mowing at the normal level. Try mowing at a slower rate to get a better and cleaner cut. Lastly, clean out any dirt and debris that has built up on the underside of the deck.

Problem 6: Mower Will Not Cut In Reverse

This is not a problem at all -- it is a safety feature. The cutting deck must be disengaged before the tractor can be shifted into reverse. However if the riding lawn mower was produced in 2005 or later it may be equipped with reverse mowing technology. This allows the operator to mow in reverse. Refer to the operator's manual for instructions.

Problem 7: Tractor Will Not Move Freely In Neutral

Check the operating manual to ensure the transmission relief valve is in the proper position. If it does not move in neutral, make sure the brake is fully releasing.

The DIY Way To Sharpen Lawn Mower Blades

Is your lawn mower tearing of the lawn grass blades instead of cutting it? Does your lawn look like it has been eaten by a goat, in spite of being cut by the lawn mower? Wait; do not pull your hair by the root. Help is at hand. We will teach you how to sharpen the lawn mower blades at minimum price and effort.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

Your Manual Lawn Mower - The Faithful Walk Behinds

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

Tools: The tools that your will require for doing this job are

You and your time of about 2 hours or less

A bastard file of about 12" long

A small crow bar to prevent movement of rotor of lawn mower.

A worktable will be useful for dong the job comfortably.

Procedure: You can use the following procedure as a general guide and make changes to it to suit you. Remember the procedure is not sacrosanct. The results are important, not the procedure.

If possible, remove the handle of lawn mower and place lawn mower on the table.

Secure it if possible in the clamps. If you do not have clamps, do not bother, secure it against any block, so that the movement away from you is restricted.

Fix the crowbar in the blades so that it will not rotate

With the help of the bastard file, file the edges of blades so that they look sharp. Work at an angle of 45 degrees

When one blade is sharpened, remove the crowbar and turn the rotor to work on another blade. Repeat the procedure until all blades are sharpened.

If you have a flexible shaft grinder in your DIY workshop, you will be able to complete the work within 5 to 10 minutes per blade. Make a template of blade profile before you start your work and compare frequently. This is necessary to ensure that you do not over cut at a place.

Safety Tip For You

While sharpening the blades ensure that the stroke is not too long otherwise, you may injure yourself.

Sharpening Blades Of Power Mower

Depending upon the lawn mower the procedure may vary. We have included general statements in this procedure; you would have to change the procedure slightly. Keep the maintenance manual of lawn mower handy if you have one.

Tools required.

Siphon hose and clean container

Heavy work gloves and goggles

Double-cut (medium-rough) flat file

Lumber scrap

Socket wrench set

Rubber mallet*

Bench vise or C clamps

Rotary blade sharpener accessory

Electric drill*

Screwdriver, or 1/4-in. rod or bolt*

Blade balancer

Replacement blade*

* Only if required

The list may look formidable, but tools are generally available with every DIY enthusiast.

Procedure:

The procedure is given for the simple single blade lawn mower, but the same will apply to all types of blades, whether single or double

Wear hand gloves and clean the engine and the gasoline tank from outside

Remove spark plug from the engine

Remove all the fuel from the tank of the gasoline engine. Use the siphon hose so you do not spill gasoline on floor.

Completely empty out the oil from gearbox if you have one

Invert the engine and have access to the blade.

Clamp the engine so it does not move and clean the blade area thoroughly

With help of a box spanner, remove the nut holding the blade. Usually the nut will be unlocked in the reverse to direction of rotation of engine. You may engage the screwdriver in the cooling fan of engine to stop rotation of engine.

If you find that you are using too much force to unlock the nut, put one or two drops of rust removing chemical, and try after 30 minutes

After you remove the blade, clamp it in the bench vise and sharpen it with a file or a grinder. Sharpen only the outer 2 to 3 inches. The area to be sharpened will be known if you see the blade.

Sharpen only to the required extent. Too much sharpening is not necessary. This is not the knife. It works at the speed of the engine

After sharpening, check with your thumb. Be careful not to cut thumb. If you have done sharpening before, or seen some one doing it, you will know what we mean by this.

Balance the blade with help of a small balancing tool on VEE blocks, or even on two foot rulers placed side by side

Refit the blades, refill engine oil and gasoline and test the sharpness of blades on uncut portion of your lawn

Safety tips:

Always use safety goggles and hand gloves when working with power tools.

Be sure to remove the spark plug before starting. Serious accidents can happen if you do not do this.

How to Maintain Your Ride on Lawn Mower

A ride on lawn mower is expensive, and you have to treat it well if you want it to be alive for a long time. There are some simple things you can do to make sure your mower will keep going for a long time. Each ride on mower model is different, but all of them need the following basic maintenance jobs done once in a while.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

Check the oil - Make sure that you check the engine oil regularly. It is good to make a habit of checking it before you start to mow your lawn each time. Few things will ruin an engine quicker than it running out of oil. Change the oil - You should change the oil in your lawn mower every fifty hours or so. Many people do it before they start mowing for the first time in the spring. Spark plugs - Inspect the spark plugs every year at least, especially if your ride on mower is sounding differently. If it is badly worn, you can replace it easily and cheaply. Air filter - The air filter should be changed on your ride on lawn mower tractor once a year, or even sooner if it gets lots of wear and tear. Air filters can easily get clogged with dust and debris, so cleaning or changing them frequently is a must. Lawn mower blades - A great trick to keep your lawn mower going strong is to take the blades off and have them sharpened. You can sharpen them yourself easily with a grinder, but if you don't have one you can take them off and bring them to a lawn mower repair shop. Keeping your blades sharp means the engine does not have to work as hard to cut the grass. Clean the cutting deck - Clean the bottom deck of the lawn mower (when it is turned off, of course!) and remove any grass clippings that are stuck to the sides or wrapped around the blade. Sometimes grass gets stuck on the blade rotors, and this increases the strain on the engine. Belts - Inspect the belts every once in a while. There are belts that turn the mowing blades, and sometimes these get worn and snap. Make sure they are snug and in good shape.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

These are just a few of the things you can do to keep your ride on lawn mower going strong for years. Take a look at the owner's manual that came with the machine for other maintenance suggestions.

Why Use a Lawn Mower Lift?

Using a lawn mower lift instead of a makeshift jack is safer, more efficient, and easier. If you have to do maintenance on any type of heavy lawn equipment, put your money into purchasing a mower jack. One of these mechanisms can secure the heavy equipment in an upright position so that you can access the underside safely. Using this type of configuration makes the work go faster and more efficiently. If you work on heavy lawn equipment for a living, having one of these mower lifts is a necessity not an option. It will make your job much easier and allow you to take on more clients.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

How does using a lawn mower lift make working on heavy lawn equipment safer?

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

Let's face it, riding lawn mowers and other large pieces of lawn equipment can be extremely heavy. It takes special equipment in order to access the underside of these pieces of equipment safely. The weight is a factor in this problem and there are dangers in working with sharp blades and moving parts under one of these pieces of equipment. Being able to secure the equipment and lock it into place makes working with it much safer for everyone around.

How does using a lawnmower list make maintenance and repairs more efficient?

If you work in a repair shop, you need to keep the work flowing in order to keep the money coming in. If you have a piece of equipment that can make your job easier and faster, it only makes sense that it would be more efficient. By using one of these lifts, you can easily and quickly hoist a piece of heavy lawn equipment up right and access the undercarriage. This allows you to get the work done faster and with a better safety margin than using a makeshift lift system.

How does using a lawn mower lift make maintenance and repairs easier?

When you use a lawn mower lift to pull a piece of equipment up in the air, you can access the underside easily. The high position allows you to see clearly, where your hands are going and this makes doing the work faster and more efficient. By being able to see what you are doing and working in a space where you have room to move, you can get the job done and get onto the next piece of equipment. That is a wise investment for any shop.

A Review of Troy Bilt Self Propelled Lawn Mowers

Walk behind lawn mowers are made for households with smaller lawn areas. They are the highest selling lawn machine type in the world. You have the option of either buying a push drive mower or if you want more control and steering capability then you should consider getting a self propelled walk behind garden mower.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

There are many popular brands out there on the market. To name few of them, you have John Deere, Toro, Husqvarna, and you also have Troy Bilt. TB is offering six models in the walk behind range. All of them are competitively priced and there is also a good warranty offered on them.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

TB210

Built with a 190cc engine along with a Briggs and Stratton Starting Promise, many people have found this model very dependable and easy to use. This front wheel self propelled mower has a single speed motor, a 21" cutting deck, and a TriAction cutting system technology. It is probably Troy Bilt most popular model.

TB230

It has similar features to the TB 210 in terms of engine power and drive system. However this model has a variable speed motor easily changed with a squeeze grip. Some users find the model easy and comfortable to use. As a matter of fact, Troy Bilt has included a 6 position dual lever deck height adjuster and 3-position heights adjuster for the handle. There have been great reviews on this model

TB250

If you are looking for well known Japanese reliability then you should consider the TB 250 3-in-1 variable speed front wheel drive mower. Built with a powerful 160cc Honda engine, it has all the features Troy Bilt has to offer on the other models. Something that is different on this model compared to the first two is the starting system which is Automatic Return Choke System (ARCS).

TB270 ES

If you want to be able to start your mower with a key turn and nothing fancy, then the TB 270 ES is a good choice. The electric start is a great feature enjoyed by many users. Expect the same other features on the engine, drive system, and comforts compared to the other self propelled models.

TB325 XP

This model has a 3-in-1 capability - side discharge, mulching, and rear bag. It comes with a powerful 160cc Honda engine and a 4-speed continuous variable speed transmission system. Other notable features include a 21" steel mulching deck and a 3 year warranty for peace of mind. There have a mixed review on this model, but overall a TB210 or TB230 are cheaper models to consider.

TB340 XP

The last self propelled lawn mower in the walk behind range is the TB340 XP. Built with a 175cc Briggs and Stratton engine and a 4-speed continuous variable speed transmission, this rear wheel self propelled mower will go through half an acre of lawn in less than an hour. This model from Troy Bilt has received a lot of negative reviews from customers. Issues with durability and ease of starting are the two main reasons.

The company is famous for its tractors and the tractors are well received in the market. It manufactures tractors from 18 HP to 450 Hp in about 13 series and it might be difficult to give the information about the entire range of products. We will examine one tractor carefully and read about the pros and cons of this tractor as a representative of the company. We would select the tractor with the smallest power as a home gardener we will be interested in the smaller size tractor.

The model we have selected is the 2210 4WD compact tractor.

The Power plant: The features of the tractor look very good and power plant gives 23 HP, through a liquid cooled engine. It uses diesel as fuel and is very economical in the use of fuel. The coolant flow is a generous 5.5 gallons per minute keeping the engine cool.

Other features: The tractor has a 4-wheel drive and the 4 wheel to 2 wheel drive can be selected when the tractor is working. The wheels can be locked individually to increase traction when it is required for other wheels. The power take off points are provided in the rear and in the middle for supplying power to other implements when it is required.

Driver comfort: It features hydraulic transmission so you do not have problems in shifting gears while driving. You can also make direction changes easily with the power steering. The controls are operated through Twin Touch(TM) two-pedal foot control. This leads to driver comfort and ease of driving. The engine is mounted on isolators and hence the engine vibrations are not transmitted to the driver decreasing driver fatigue.

Engine Reliability: The engine is reliable and works up to the last drop of fuel. On refilling of fuel, the auto bleed removes the air in the system and the engine starts immediately. The tractor has oil immersed wet disk brakes and the action is quick and responsive

Safety features: The engine will not start unless the operator is in seat and the tractor meets all the ASAE, SAE and OSHA standards. It makes this tractor as very safe and easy to use.

Costs: The tractor retails at prices starting from ,000 upwards.

Attachments to the tractor: The tractor is versatile and can take up many attachments. One such attachment is the 54-inch blade that can turn the tractor into a front-end loader. The attachment features a concave surface blade with heavy gauge construction with reinforcing angle added to the rear of blades for added strength.

The attachment can be tilted through 30 degrees for effective use. With help of this attachment, you can do shifting of soil if there is any need or do the leveling of the field.

Extensive search on internet did not give any adverse remark.

Find Many Trusted Names in Lawn and Garden Tractors

Even though there are many manufacturers of the Lawn And Garden Tractors that you see on the market today, there is one that stands up with the major players of this industry and that one manufacturer is Toro. It is a very popular name in the lawn care products because it has built its name on giving products that are affordable but yet the quality is not compromised in order to make them affordable. Their products perform very well and there are many very happy testimonials that you can find on the Internet from many consumers who are currently using their products.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

Toro is a leading stronghold in the industry of Lawn And Garden Tractors. They hold their own up against other very big names such as Poulan and John Deere. Their favorite model per consumer review is the Timecutter Z4300. This model has this name because this tractor can move up to 7 miles per hour, which would definitely cut down the time that is spent outside cutting the grass. This model has been ranked as being one of the best lawn tractors that you can buy on the market today.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

It has a cutting height of 4.5 inches, but you can definitely set it lower in order to get a much shorter, cleaner cut. It will cut the grass very evenly and will get it done very quickly so you are spending more of your time enjoying your lawn instead of cutting it. This is one of the Lawn And Garden Tractors that has a zero-turn mower which means that when you are cutting your rows of grass, when you reach the end where you turn, it will cut the middle grass that is usually left in the turn that you always have to go back and cut again.

Even though this tractor is a favorite, it still has a con about it that is spoken out from the consumers. It does not do very well on hills or rough terrain. Consumers want Toro to try and fix this problem with this tractor because they enjoy it too much to go to another type among the many Lawn And Garden Tractors that there are to choose from. Though it has this downfall, consumers are still purchasing it and keeping it in the top of the list for most popular tractor mowers. Consumers can pick this tractor up at a supplier for around a price range of 5.00 up to around 00.00 depending on where they purchase it from, and if they get it new or used.

Which Snow Blower Is the Best One For Your Needs?

Do you live in an area which has enough snow each year that you constantly have to shovel it from your driveway and walkways? If so you will know what a back breaking and time consuming job it can be using a shovel. You will of course have thought about buying a snow blower or snow thrower as they are properly called. Or you already have a snow thrower but now need to replace it because it is broken, worn out or you perhaps need a larger more powerful one or maybe a smaller easier to handle model. Snow blowers don't actually blow the snow which is why their proper name is "snow thrower". Snow is ejected at speed from the chute or out of the front of the machine either by the speed of the auger or on a two stage machine, by an impeller inside the output chute.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

So What Snow Blower are Available to Suite Your Needs?

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

There are four types of snow blower or thrower which will be of use to most domestic property owners. Starting with the smallest and going up in size, these are as follows:-

Electric snow shovels. Small electric machines similar in size to a shovel with around a 12-inch cutting width and usually of 7 to 9 amps in power Electric snow blowers. Larger electric machines usually with wheels and around 18 inches cutting width of 12 to 15 amps Gas powered single stage snow blowers. Larger than the electric machines and with bigger wheels. Snow is ejected through the chute by speed of the auger blade Gas powered two stage snow blowers. Top end domestic machines, two stage snow blowers cut through the snow the same as other machines, but the snow is then ejected from the chute by an impeller inside the output chute rather than by the speed of the auger

and, for clearing really large areas such a long driveway

Snow blowers and plow attachments. Attachments for garden tractors and even for on-road utility vehicles

What Job is each Type of Snow Blower Best For?
Electric Snow Shovel. An electric powered snow shovel is great for clearing small areas, steps, decks and patios. They are light weight and very easy to move around. They are limited to being able to clear snow up to about 150 feet maximum away from the electrical outlet and no more than about 4 to 6 inches of fresh light snow in one pass Electric Powered Snow Blowers. Electric powered snow blowers tend to be of around 18-inches cutting width and usually have a power rating of between 12 and 15 amps. These electric machines are good for clearing larger areas of snow up to the size of a 3 car driveway and accompanying sidewalks. They tend to be rated to be able to clear up to 10 inches of snow at a time but 4 to 6-inches depth of snow is more realistic. They are limited to being able to clear snow up to about 150 feet maximum from the electrical outlet. Gas Powered Single Stage Snow Blowers. Gas powered single stage snow throwers are usually 21 to 24-inches and are rated to clear around 12-inches of snow at a time but most are happy with removing 6 to 8 inches in one pass. Single stage gas blowers tend to be powered by 4-cycle engines nowadays rather than 2-cycle engines, thus eliminating the need for adding oil to the gas. 4-cycle engines are also quieter than 2-cycle engines and also tend to have more torque which means that they cope better with tougher conditions. Single stage snow throwers tend to require the operator to push them as the wheels aren't driven but saying that, they do drag themselves along by the cutting action of the auger. Gas Powered Two Stage Snow Blowers. These are the top end machines for clearing areas around domestic properties. These blowers are sized from 24 to 33-inch cutting width and are self-propelled with up to 6 forward speeds and reverse. Two stage snow throwers are also able to cope better with wet snow as it is driven from the chute by a secondary impeller and are also able to clear snow of up to 24-inches in-depth. These two stage snow throwers are large in size which means that they aren't as flexible to use as smaller single stage or electric machines and they also need substantial storage space. Larger Snow Blowers - Attachments. Attachments such as snow throwers and snow plows are available for garden tractors and for utility vehicles.

Which Type of Snow Blower is the Best One for Your Property?

This will depend on the amount of snow you normally have and how large the area is that you need to clear. So, the larger the area, the larger, more powerful the snow blower you will need. After all, you don't want to be clearing the snow all day as there are better things you could be doing.

Steps, Decking, Patio, Paths etc. Really the only option for these smaller areas is a normal shovel or an electric powered snow shovel. Small Sized Area - 3 Cars plus Walkways. If you have a small driveway for up to two cars, plus side walks around the house then an electric shovel may do but I suggest an electric powered snow blower of around 18-inches would be more ideal. A driveway of more than two cars and you definitely need an electric snow blower and not an electric shovel. As with an electric lawn mower, the electric cord can be a problem and so care is needed when using the blower not to cut the cord. Medium Sized Area - 2 to 5 Car Driveway plus Walkways. If you can get electricity to the limit of where you need to clear the snow then I suggest an electric powered snow thrower would be ideal as there is no gas required, no starting problems, easier to store than a gas blower, easier to handle and when you want to use it you just get it out, plug it in and off you go. A gas powered single stage machine will do a similar job to an electric one and you will be able to clear snow where there is no access to electricity within 150 feet. I suggest a single stage gas powered machine will be useful for a driveway which will take up to five cars plus walkways. Large Sized Area - Larger Than 5 car Driveway. If you have an area larger than 5 cars or experience regular heavy snow falls then you will need a gas powered two stage blower. Remember also that two stage snow throwers have driven wheels and up to 6 forward speeds plus reverse, and so are easier on your muscles, back and lungs than electric or single stage machines where the auger is what drags you through the snow. Massive Sized Area - Long Driveway, Large Parking Area etc. If you have a very large such as a long driveway or parking for ten plus cars and own a lawn tractor, ATV or compact tractor then attachments are available to enable you to clear the snow from the comfort of the seat of any of these vehicles. Attachments are also available for on road utility vehicles such as a pick up truck but unless your property is miles from the main road then you won't need to consider these.

The Workings of a Clock & Watch

A watchwork or clockwork is made up of a set of gears connected together. The gears in a watch or clock are called wheels, and there are usually five of them. The first of the series is the largest. Each succeeding one is usually smaller and turns faster. The wheels are powered by a spring known as the mainspring, which is coiled inside a drum attached to the largest wheel.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

When the stiff mainspring is wound up tightly and released, it starts to unwind again. As it unwinds, it moves the largest wheel. The large wheel turns the center wheels, the center one turns the third wheel, and the third one turns the fourth. If the spring were allowed to unwind at its own speed, the clock or watch, would not keep time because the speed of the turning wheels could not be controlled. The fifth wheel is part of the escapement, and it fixes the rate at which all them turn.

John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

The escapement in a watch and some clocks is made up of a balance wheel, a hairspring, and an escape wheel. The hairspring, a tiny elastic strip inside the balance, links the balance wheel with the rest of the watch. When the balance one begins to move, it pulls against the hairspring, which immediately pulls back and changes the direction of the movement of the balance wheel. As the balance wheel regularly turns back and forth, two fingerlike prongs hit the notched edges, of the escape wheel.

Each time the escape wheel begins to move freely, it is stopped by one of the prongs controlled by the balance and held briefly. One tooth of the escape wheel has time to move before the other prong stops the escape wheel again. The regular back-and-forth movement of the balance wheel keeps the escape wheel turning one tooth at a time. The tick we hear in a watch is from the escape wheel each time a tooth escapes. If the watch gains or loses time, it is because the balance wheel is too fast or too slow.

In a pendulum clock the escapement is regulated by a pendulum in place of the balance wheel. The escape wheel is attached to the fourth wheel, and its regular turning holds the movement of the other wheels to a set speed. The fourth wheel turns once each minute. The second hand is attached to the fourth wheel. The center wheel turns once each hour. The minute hand is attached to the center wheel.

Each axle, or pivot, of the gears turns in a bearing. Jewels are often used as bearings in watches and clocks. The hard, smooth surface of a jewel allows the axle to move freely, and the jewel outlasts a metal bearing. High- quality timepieces have many jewel bearings, but jewels alone do not make a high quality ometer is a very large, accurate watch mounted in a special bracket to keep it level on a rolling sea.

The chronograph is an accurate timer that includes the timing action of the stopwatch and also indicates the time of day. Chronographs are valuable aids in laboratory tests and in studying the movements of stars or the time it takes a ship to sail from place to place. The most accurate astronomical clocks are used in observatories to time the movements of stars to the second.
